BIRTH SUPPORT

my services
"If a doula were a drug it would be unethical not to use it"
Dr John H. Kennell
I so believe in our ability to give birth physiologically, as a rite of passage with it's long list of known benefits to you and your baby long term. Equally as strongly I believe in our right to make informed choices in pregnancy and birth and I'll be here to guide you, respectfully alongside your care providers, to make informed decisions that feel right for you from a place of emotional safety, intuition and empowerment, whatever comes your way.
I proudly believe that holding mothers and parents as they grow their families creates beautiful generational change, in a society that has largely forgotten how to prioritise this. I'd love to support you.
I offer a free, 30 minute discovery call for an informal chat to see if I feel like the right doula for you.

Postnatal support
£90 per visit

Too often an afterthought with birth prep, the oh-so-important fourth trimester, with all it's own highs and lows, joys and challenges as you navigate your physical and emotional transition to motherhood, your breastfeeding journey, sleep adjustments and baby care. Let me be a reassuring and practical guide through the fog, helping you to protect the time to rest and bond, reminding you how beautifully you are doing every step of the way, just in case you forget.
Postnatal visits last around 3 hours each (the first one ideally in the first 14 days) to provide emotional and/or hands on support; I could wash up, fold some laundry, help with any feeding concerns, hold the baby while you have a shower or get some much needed rest, or simply hold space for you to talk about however you're feeling.
My postnatal support includes one antenatal visit to ensure I'm a familiar face and to help plan for the type of support you'd like.
If you'd like to purchase postnatal support as a gift for some new parents in your life, I can create a personalised voucher for you.

Is there evidence on doula support? As you're here, you're probably already aware that hiring a doula is a positive investment for you and your family. But how positive? Several studies have highlighted the following benefits of continual support in pregnancy, birth & postpartum, and I love to share them because it's quite incredible what feeling safe and supported, with someone familiar in your corner, can do to help physiological birth unfold well; - 12% increase in the likelihood of spontaneous labour - shorter labour duration by an average of 41 minutes - up to 60% reduction in epidural requests - up to 40% reduction in instrumental birth - up 40% reduction in use of synthetic oxytocin - up to 50% reduction in caesarean birth - overall improved satisfaction and feeling of autonomy in the birth experience - higher 5 minute APGAR scores for babies - 14% reduction in the risk of babies being admitted to NICU, and shorter stays for those who are - improved breastfeeding success rates - improved experiences of early bonding and parent confidence - shorter birth recovery time - reduced rates of postnatal depression ...and there have been no reported downsides.

Can't my midwife give me continuity of care and evidence based information? In an ideal world, yes. However, with the strain on NHS maternity care and staffing shortages, even the very best Midwives working in the system struggle to provide true individualised care due to time constraints and heavy pressure to conform to NICE guidelines and hospital policy, which are not always evidence based or individualised. Your doula works for YOU, not the NHS, so I am here to make sure you have all the time, information and evidence that you need to keep you front and centre in your pregnancy and birth experience, feeling confident and empowered. Of course, nothing is guaranteed with birth (or indeed life!) but we can stack the odds in your favour to have the experience that you really want. It's more important than ever to prepare yourself well antenatally. Each baby is only born once!
-
Do you support free birth?Yes. I'll support whatever feels right for you. You have a legal right to freebirth if that is your choice and I can make sure you understand your birth rights and legal obligations. It is also your responsibility. You also have the option of hiring an independent midwife if you'd like midwifery care outside of the NHS guidelines. My role as your doula is entirely non clinical, it is simply to walk alongside you, hold space and help to facilitate what feels safest and most comfortable for you. That in itself supports the physiology of birth.
-
Can I pay in instalments?Yes absolutely, let me know in our chemistry call if you'd like to pay in instalments and we discuss frequency, depending on how far along in your pregnancy you are.
